Prompt 6 theorist: Vygotsky

Teachers should be sensitive to the students language issues. By being sensitive and taking time to help students become more fluent with the English barrier students will learn the language better. In my classroom the teacher is very sensitive to the students needs. She understands that not everyone speaks English at home. Although I have not heard any accents from the students when speaking, I think she might have because she gives verbal reading assessments. When I asked her about the assessments she told me she doesn't grade based on the way the say something she grades based on their knowledge of the subject. She seems very kind and understanding to their language barriers. She also understands that these students come from low income families. She realizes that they can't always afford to buy the materials needed for class. She goes out and buys them for her students. She gives them pencils, folders, and any other material she may need. They end up costing her a lot of money. She also understands that these students have a different background then her. They have different values at home which come out in the classroom. At home homework isn't valued so the teacher has to work twice as hard to make students participate in classwork in school. She also has to work to make a good class culture that values participation, hard work, and finishing classwork. The teacher and the students need to interact with each other and become partners in learning. They need to develop relationships with each other to see what the other person values.
Vygotsky believes in two different planes for learning. He believes learning is first social then become psychological. If the student and teacher are interacting with each other to become partners in learning and coming up with shared values they will take these values and internalizing them. These students will have a better chance of learning and become active parts of the classroom. They will have shared values and help each other learn. I hope this is the type of classroom I have, one where the students and I both participate in creating values and the course syllabus. These are part of the ideas Vygotsky discussed in his article. Although his article was with children with disabilities it also applies to children without disabilities. Every child needs these two planes to help learn. They need to start learning with social situations and then it becomes part of the psychological learning.

  1. That is very nice of your teacher to do that and go out of her way to buy them things. That just shows how much your teacher cares about her kids education. My teacher is the same way believe it or not. She does the best she can in giving these kids the best education possible. I can see that you really admire your teacher and that you probably had her evaluate you lol. =) Its great how that your teacher interacts with each other and become partners in learning.

  2. Kali,
I think some of the situations you talked about in this blog are so telling. It shows that your teacher loves what she does and she takes alot of time trying to make her students get the best out of their education, despite the fact that they dont have all the school supplies they need. I could not imagine going through school without all of the proper materials. I bet some of these kids dont even realize what there actually missing out on.
It is good to also know that your teacher realizes the fact that not all students speak English at home and that she again takes time to compromise with their needs. Its probably tough to know that your students come to school almost for a get away from their personal lives. I agree with Vygotsky in that learning is social and psychological. I always learn better when interacting with other students. You listen and hear what others have to say and It helps you take out what you think it most important from it. I also agree with Vygotsky when he says that learning is also psychological because I believe that if you tell yourself over and over again that you can do something then you will get it done, but if you tell yourself you can’t do something and don’t put your mind into it you really wont do what you have to do.
I hope you got something out of your experience as a volunteer in the Providence public school system, and I hope you have a good summer! Take care

  3. Kali,

I enjoyed reading this post! It was touching to read the examples of how much work your teacher puts into these students education. It is great to hear that she cares about the students that much. I can only imagine how hard it is to teach in an inner city school where not only the students can't afford the materials, but the school itself can't afford them either. I noticed that the teacher of my classroom also does the same with buying materials that are needed.Just like Taylor said, I bed some of these children aren't even aware of what they are missing out on. I can't decide if them being unaware is a good thing or not. But bottom line, I have realized that it takes a special person to become an inner city teacher.
I also agree with Vygotsky's points. Again, like Taylor said... I find myself learning more and getting more out of interacting with others than just working on my own. I find interaction is the best way to learn, for myself that is.
Hope you had an overall great experience in this class room! Talk to you soon!
